Becoming a Mentor: An Orientation

3.1 A Mentor's Overview

Few bonds in life are more influential than those between a young person and an adult.

Since mentoring is so important to young people, most adults want to know the basics before they are matched with a child. Typically they want to know-

  • What is a Mentor
  • What is expected of me?
  • Am I really up for the job?

The lessons that follow should put any worries you have to rest. They'll give you a chance to take stock of what you already know about mentoring and teach you more about what a Mentor is.

The lessons you will review in Section 3 are:

  • Your Role as Mentor
  • Qualities of Successful Mentors
  • Personal Reflection
  • Tips for Success
  • Common Concerns
